COLUMBIA A private graveside service for Lauriston Keith Whittle, 90, will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November, 7, 2011, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mr. Whittle died Friday, November 4, 2011. Born in Aiken County on a farm near Williston, he was a son of the late Curtis Columbus and Effie Wise Whittle.
A 1948 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, he was a member of the American and South Carolina Bar Associations. He was founder and owner of Whittle's Real Estate and Insurance in Williston. He practiced law there from 1951 to 1991 and continued as a real estate broker until retirement in 2003. He moved to Columbia in 2004 with Anne, his beloved wife of 57 years.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II (1942-1946), he was well known and respected for his leadership and civic service, especially in the Barnwell County area. He was a member and former Adjutant and Commander of the American Legion, a member of the Jaycees and first president and charter member of the Williston Lions Club. In addition, he was first president of the Blue Devils Booster Club formed to advance local athletics and first president of the Williston Progressive Association designed to attract industry to the area. He was named Businessman of the Year by the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce in 1986.
Mr. Whittle was an Affiliate Member of Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia and a life-long member of Williston United Methodist Church where he served in various leadership capacities. He was a former chairman of the church's Administrative Board and Finance Committee and often served as teacher for the Ruth Rogers Sunday School class.
The life of Mr. Whittle was defined by his steadfast faith to God and country, his devotion to family and loyalty to friends, his firm commitment to community service and his extraordinary work ethic. His quick wit and generous nature, sense of honor and indomitable spirit was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Baker Black Whittle of Columbia; two daughters, Susan Anne Whittle Watts of Columbia, Lauri Keith Whittle Edwards of Hendersonville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Anne Baker Watts of Myrtle Beach, William Finch Watts of Columbia, Luke Allen Edwards Jr. and Meredith Keith Edwards, both of Hendersonville. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Whittle Ritter Wise; brothers, Rudolph "Rye", Curtis Columbus "Jake", Minnick Quincy, Herbert Tillman and Freddie Fellows Whittle.
